Manufacturer's Specification
Sealant & Vinyl Connector Clips
1. Sealant is required at all butt joints.
2. Vinyl Connector Clips are required for Flannery’s Plaster Channel Screeds.
3. Use Flannery’s Aluminum Alignment Splices or Vinyl Connector Clips to align moldings.
Lathing Instructions for Aluminum Moldings
Vertical Installation-
1. Building Paper must be placed behind all moldings and have a shiplap of 6”.
2. Attach moldings 16” on center to framing using approved fastening methods.
3. Install lath over installation flanges of all moldings.
4. Use cloth or vinyl tape specifically manufactured for masking anodized aluminum moldings prior to plastering. For painted moldings, use vinyl tape.
Horizontal Installation-
1. Building Paper must be placed behind all moldings and have a shiplap of at least 2”.
2. Attach moldings 16” on center to framing using approved fastening methods.
3. Install lath over upper installation flange of moldings.
4. Install lath over bottom installation flange of moldings.
5. Use cloth or vinyl tape specifically manufactured for masking anodized aluminum moldings prior to plastering. For painted moldings, use vinyl tape.
Lathing Instructions for Aluminum Moldings after Building Paper & Lath have been Installed
1. Molding selection must be in accordance with the proper plaster thickness specified.
2. Moldings must be tied to the lath with tie wire, thus protecting the waterproof membrane.
3. All installation flanges of the moldings must be covered with lath.
4. Please note that the Uniform Building Code requires two layers of grade “D” paper when applied over wood-based sheathing.
Prefabricated Factory Intersections
Flannery’s prefabricated factory intersections and corners are manufactured with the same or different moldings. They are used to complete intricate building designs that utilize intersecting lines (both vertical and horizontal) around interior or exterior walls. The intersections and corners are mitered and then welded at the installation flanges. A seal is then applied to the back of the intersecting butt joints. The standard intersection or corner comes with 6” legs from the center point of the reveal. Custom leg lengths are also available. All installation flanges must be covered with lath and all butt joints must be sealed.
Installation Instructions for Moldings with Tapeable Flanges
1. Moldings with Tapeable Flanges are to be installed after the drywall/gypsum board has been installed. The installer must provide space for the moldings at the time of installation or cut the drywall/gypsum board with a router.
2. The framining should provide a backer so that moldings can be attached with #6 drywall screws 16” on center.
3. Before the taping process begins, installation flanges should be cleaned. If veneer plaster is specified, the installation flanges must be treated with a bonding agent.
4. Tape should not overlap the edge of the reveal. An 8” wide trowel should be used to apply the final skim coat.
5. Fiberglass, self-adhesive drywall tape will shorten taping time and assist in the prevention of possible cracking.
Cutting Aluminum Moldings
1. Aluminum Moldings can be cut with a chop saw, using a 150-tooth carbide-tip blade for non-ferrous metal.
2. Lubricant (WD-40 or grease stick) must be appled to the blade before each cut and an abrasive cut-off wheel must not be used.
Field Painting
Clear Anodized Aluminum Moldings –
If field painting of clear anodized moldings is necessary, the following steps must be taken to improve the bond between the paint and the aluminum surface:
1. Clean and treat moldings with an acid etch solution (i.e. mild concentration of muriatic acid), then rinse thoroughly and allow to dry.
2. Use a primer recommended by the manufacturer of the paint to be used.
3. Apply the paint coat according to the paint manufacturer’s specifications.
Mill Finish Aluminum Moldings –
1. Clean and treat moldings in accordance with the paint manufacturer’s specifications.
2. Use a primer recommended by the manufacturer of the paint to be used.
3. Apply the paint coat according to the paint manufacturer’s specifications.
Flannery makes no guarantees, nor accepts any responsibility, for the performance of field-applied coatings over anodized or mill finishes.

This website presents general guidelines and suggestions for the installation of Flannery trims and products. The purpose of these general guidelines and suggestions is to aid in a successful drywall or stucco finish based on the Uniform Building Code and industry standards. No website or catalog can address all of the unique specifics or installation details that occur from one project to another. Flannery recommends that every installer be familiar, or become acquainted with, common drywall and stucco trim installation practices before installing any of Flannery's many trims and products. Flannery also recommends that the specifying architect, engineer, and general contractor be consulted with as well.
